CSU Guitarist Wins Mississippi Competition

Ying Xu, a second-year guitar student of Dr. Andrew Zohn, has won First Prize in the Mississippi Guitar Festival Competition. Held November 11-12 at Belhaven University, the annual event includes competitions, lectures, master classes and concerts offered for the enrichment of enthusiasts, professionals and students of the classical guitar. Congratulations, Ying!

Voice Students Earn Five 1st-Place Awards at Georgia NATS

Columbus State University Students had an especially strong showing at  the Georgia National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions, held in early November at Kennesaw State University.  
Cameron Richardson, Category 8A, was selected Grand Winner. He is a student of Earl Coleman, Curry Eminent Faculty Scholar Chair in Voice at the Schwob School of Music.

Schwob Students Excel at 2016 MTNA State Competition

Columbus State students won most of the top categories at the recent Music Teachers National Association state competition held at Mercer University.

CSU Guitarists Win, Place in Two Competitions

Schwob School guitarists placed highly in recent competitions in the Southeast. Ying Xu won Second Place at the Florida Guitar Competition, and Woodruff Scholar Dragos Ilie won Third Place in the same competition, as well as First Place in the University of Louisville Guitar Competition. Both are second-year students of Dr. Andrew Zohn, who holds the Jo and George Jeter Distinguished Chair in Guitar.

Roderick Cox '09 Named Associate Conductor of Minnesota Orchestra

Schwob School alumnus Roderick Cox (B.M. 2009), who was appointed the Minnesota Orchestra’s assistant conductor in June 2015, has been named associate conductor for the 2016-17 season, the Orchestra announced today. He earned his Master's in conducting from Northwestern University in Chicago and attended the Conductors Guild Conductor/Composer Training Workshop at the Cabrillo Festival in California.
As associate conductor, Cox will make his classical subscription debut in three concerts January 19 to 21, 2017, leading Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, the latter with pianist Joyce Yang. He will also continue to lead the orchestra's Young People’s Concerts, Symphonic Adventures programs in area high schools, and outdoor summer performances, as well as serving as understudy conductor for many of the Orchestra’s Classical and Live at Orchestra Hall concert performances. The associate conductor serves also as a link to the community, participating in engagement activities, school visits and collaborations with other Minnesota arts and cultural institutions.

Schwob School alumni are distinguishing themselves in venues and organizations near and far. Here's a selection of their recent activity.

Liliya Ugay, composer/pianist (BM 2014), is starting a DMA at Yale as a student of Aaron J. Kernis. Won the Charles Ives Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Had orchestral premiere as a result with the Albany Symphony. Won second prize at Molinari Quartet International Composition Competition: Sole winner for the New England Philharmonic call for scores: Her most recent orchestral work will be performed by New England Phil and Richard Pittman on April 29 in Boston; Curating Carson McCullers concert for February 19th in Nyack NY. Will premiere a chamber trio as part of this event; Has commissions with the Raleigh Civic Symphony (cond. Peter Askim), Duo Canora (oboe and harp), and a new work with Cambordian-American poetess Sokunthary Svay and Yale/NYC soprano Jin-Xiang Yu on creating a vocal cycle centered on the topic of women struggles to be premiered in New Haven on the concert featuring a guest composer Joan Tower; presenting a concert series of Soviet chamber music by repressed composers to take place in New Haven and New York; will also perform her lecture-recital "Silenced Voices" in North Carolina State in March as a part of a series marking the anniversary of Russian Revolution.

Nathan Hudson (BA 2014) is starting his DMA at State University of New York, Stonybrook. Received a commission from the Boulder Symphony and attended premiere. Received a commission from the Cavell Trio at UA. Received a commission from the UA Wind Ensemble. Composer in residence at the Rushmore Music Festival in South Dakota. Was a finalist for the BMI Prize with his work, "Brace Yourselves". Collaborated with clarinet Alumni Ford Fourqurean on his project "Unheard-of", which toured around the Eastern seaboard.

Andrew Smith (2014) is finishing his master’s in composition from Bowling Green State University.


Dr. Joshua Kearney, MM Conducting (2013), is Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  He received a DMA from Michigan State University.

Mr. Jeffrey Lawson, MM Conducting (2014), is Director of Bands at Hollywood Hills High School in Florida.   

David Jang, orchestral conducting (BA 2014), was one of 2 out of 69 applicants selected for the Masters at Indiana University; conducted four concerts with IU orchestras this season; served as assistant conductor to Loren Maazel at the Castleton Festival, and participated in London conducting workshop with Bernard Haitink.  He is participating in masterclasses with Franz Welser Moest and the Cleveland Orchestra in Fall 2016, and is currently serving as Associate Instructor in the Opera and Orchestral Conducting department at IU.

Cristian A. Cantu (BA, 2016) is a first year student in the MM Conducting program at University of Texas at Austin under Dr. James Morrow. His Graduate Assistantship is with the Concert Chorale, University Singers, and Choral Literature class. He is also a Choral Scholar at St. David’s Episcopal Church in downtown Austin under the direction of David Stevens, singing in the Chancel Choir and Compline Chamber Singers. He will be rehearsal accompanist for St. David’s Youth Music Ministry beginning later in the semester. This summer he was Director of Residence Life at the Performing Arts Institute at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School.


Daniela Volkovinsky (flute) just completed her MM in Performance at the State University of New York at Purchase, studying with Tara Helen O'Connor.

Miranda Carlsen (flute) is the band director at Harris Co. High School.

Lynn Tsai (flute, 2006) completed her MM in flute performance with Keith Underwood at New York University. While in NY she performed her debut recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as a winner of the Artist International Competition. She is completing her DMA in flute performance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she was the Graduate Assistant to her teacher, Dr. Jennifer Grim.

Lydia Carroll (flute) is pursuing her DMA in flute performance at James Madison University where she is a student of Dr. Beth Chandler.

Kalyn Todd Kaiser (flute) is the band director at Lee Co. Middle School West.

Holly Robbins (flute) is the music teacher at Mason Creek Elementary School in Atlanta, GA.

Mando Surita (flute) is playing piccolo with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra.

Allison Lee (flute) is pursuing her master’s degree in music therapy at New York University.

Stephanie Erdman (flute) completed her MA in Arts Administration at Florida State University and was hired as the Executive Director of the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus.

Kaelah Williams McMonigle (flute) is in her ninth year at the University of Louisville as Administrative Specialist for Performance Studies at the School of Music. She performs with Chamber Winds Louisville and the chamber group A/tonal.

Jessica Harrison Knight (flute) is the music teacher at Hannan Academy in Columbus, GA.

Laura Canelo Cohen (flute) completed graduate work in Spain, France, and Italy, and began her DMA in flute performance at the University of Iowa, studying with Nicole Esposito.

Missy Mahon (flute) completed her MM in Music History at Temple University, and began an apprenticeship in flute repair with Eric South. She is working in the Atlanta area.

Kelly Fister (flute) is a fitness instructor and teaches about 10-12 classes a week in Yoga, Barre, Pilates, and Strength Training/Functional Fitness in the Atlanta area. She performs as a member of the orchestra at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.

Alex Clay (flute) is pursuing her MM in flute performance at Illinois State University where she serves as the graduate assistant for both the flute studio (under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Risinger) and the band area.

Brooke Broome (flute) is teaching general and instrumental music at Tuxedo Park School in Tuxedo Park, NY and has a private flute studio in West Point, NY. 

Lindsay Sloggett (B.Mus.Ed. 2009, MEd in Special Education 2012) is teaching at Hardaway High School as a learning support instructor within the science department.

Sarah Bridges (flute) is the choir director at Mid-Carolina High School and the music director at Suber-Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia, SC. After completing her B. Mus. Ed at CSU she attended the University of South Carolina where she received her M.Ed.


Patrick Quinn, oboe (2016), is now the Music Library Coordinator for Boston University's Mugar Memorial Library.

Teodora Pejasinovic, oboe (2016), is attending the University of Alabama on a full Teaching Assistantship to pursue her doctorate.


Ross Amend, clarinet (2011), is the Assistant Band Director at South Forsyth HS in Atlanta.

Brian Gay, clarinet (2015), is a K-3 Music Specialist and Band Director at The G.L.O.B.E. Academy in Atlanta. Brian is also a clarinetist with Tara Winds (Atlanta area concert band).

Conner Ray, clarinet (2014), is pursuing a Master of Music in Performance at Northwestern University (2016). Conner is currently a Chicago-area freelancer.

Mark Kleine, clarinet (2006), completed a Master of Music in Performance at Arizona State University in 2008 and a DMA in Clarinet Performance at the Cincinnati Conservatory, 2016.  He is currently freelancing in OH/KY/IL.

Andy Hudson, clarinet (2010), completed a Master of Music in Performance at Northwestern University in 2012.  Andy is currently pursuing a DMA at Northwestern University on a full scholarship.  Andy is also a clarinet Instructor at Lake Forest College, IL.

He is currently in Columbus working on a recording project and incidentally teaching Music Appreciation for CSU. He was recently selected for the position of Assistant Professor of Music at Florida Atlantic University, where he will serve as Trumpet Professor and Artistic Director of the Jazz Ensemble.

Andrew Ellis, percussion (2016), is now the 4th-5th grade general music teacher at Charles Spencer Elementary School, and Percussion Instructor for 4 surrounding schools in Tift Co., 6th-12th grade.

Christopher Butler, percussion (2008), is currently a Lecturer in Percussion at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. DMA- University of Kentucky and is student of Prof.
James Campbell; MM in Percussion Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign while studying with Prof. William Moersch and Prof. Ricardo Flores. 

Brandon Smith, percussion (2013), is currently Assistant Director of Programs at Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.

Lacey Guyton, percussion (2013), works with several band programs in the Atlanta area and is currently working as a substitute teacher in Gwinnett County and Percussion Instructor for Dacula High School Band..

Jennifer Wagner, percussion (2006), is a Kansas City based timpanist, percussionist, educator, and musicologist. Currently, DMA in percussion performance and a Master in Musicology at the Conservatory at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. 

Justin Baker (BMUS 06) received his Music degree in performance from Columbus State University. He completed his Master of Music Performance at Texas Tech University where he was awarded a Teaching Assistant position with the Drumline of the Goin Band, directing the second percussion ensemble, teaching percussion techniques to undergraduate music education majors, as well as teaching lessons to undergraduates within the studio. He has also recently finished his teaching certification at Texas Tech.

Diana Sharpe, percussion (2010), is an Adjunct faculty member in Aural Skills.  She has a Masters in performance with Tom Freer of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra at Cleveland State University. She has performed extensively with local orchestras in the Southeast including the Toledo Symphony, Charleston Symphony.

Chris Dye, percussion (MME 2006), serves as Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education at Middle Tennessee State University.

Jonathan Spangler, percussion (2006), is currently serving in the 18th and 62nd US Army band, where he is stationed in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He completed his Masters Degree in Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi under the direction of Dr. John Wooton. While in his studies at Southern Mississippi he performed with artists such as Sandi Patti, Renee Fleming, and Jimmy Buffett. He has also been a member of the Mississippi and Meridian Symphony orchestras.

Erin Burns, voice (2004), is a film, theater, and television actor. Upright Citizens Brigade Improv Theater (NY). Erin was recently seen in the Stephen King thriller film "Cell" with Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack

Maureen McKay, voice (2001), is with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, Grand Teatre del Liceu, Atlanta Opera, Portland Opera, Komische Oper Berlin.

Paula Sides, voice (2005) will appear in eleven productions with the English Touring Opera this season, including La Boheme (Mimi), Cosi fan Tutte (Despina) and Gianni Schicchi (Lauretta).

Trey McLaughlin, voice (2008), is a Faculty member at Jessye Norman School of the Arts (Augusta, GA), and Director of Worship and Arts at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Hannah Massie James, voice (2008), is a children's Pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY.

Afton Hawkins Pownall, voice (2008), is an Elementary Music Specialist at Britt David School in Columbus, GA.

Cecilia Felix, voice (2012), is a member of the Houston Grand Opera Chorus, and is pursuing a master's degree the University of Houston on a full fellowship in Speech Pathology.

Zachary Bryant, voice (2012), is a member of the Houston Grand Opera Chorus. He is also a teacher at the Memorial School of Music (Houston, TX).

Sabrina Prophet Robertson, voice (2006), is the Choral Director with Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia.

Matt White, voice (2006), is the Choral Director at Kendrick High School in Columbus, GA.

Allison Jones, voice (2005), is pursuing an ABD in vocal performance at the University of Kentucky.

Carrie Beth Barnett Wallace, voice (2009), is the "Ledger-Enquirer" Arts and Entertainment Columnist.

Kristen Meyers, voice (2013), is pursuing a professional singing career in Germany.

Rodney Long, voice (2011), is the Choral Director at Watkins Mill High School in Gaithersburg, MD.

Kenneth Grant, voice (2010), is the Choral Director at Woodland High School in Carterville, GA.

Terrance Green, voice (2006), is the Choral Director at Heritage High School in Conyers, GA.

Anita Purcell, voice (2009), is a professional musician and educator in New York City, NY.

Zack Wright, voice (2012), teaches at The Harvey School (independent school for grades 6-12) in White Plains, NY.

Carrie Crawford Biesiadecki, voice (2012), taught K-5 General Music at Palmetto Elementary in Fulton County, GA.

Mark Dermer (2008) is an IT employee at TSYS.

Victoria Leggett-Adams (2013) just started her Masters in Special Ed at CSU and is teaching in an autism classroom at Rigdon Road Elementary.

Erin Malone Mahadeo (2005) is teaching elementary music in Fulton County, Georgia.

Ashley Seldon, voice 2015, is completing her Masters in Vocal Performance at Southern Methodist University. She is a scholarship and graduate assistant at SMU. This summer she sang in both South Africa and Italy.

Samantha Dubois, voice 2015, is completing her Masters in Vocal Performance at the University of South Carolina on scholarship.

Kelsey Armstrong, voice 2016, is the new choral music education teacher at Callaway Middle School in LaGrange, GA.

Julie Burns, voice 2015, is the Chorus teacher at both Riverdale High School and North Clayton High School. While at CSU, Julie received a TEACH grant and is fulfilling her responsibilities to give back to her community by working at Title 1 schools.

Lawrence Abernathy, voice 2012, graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Masters in Choral Conducting in 2015, where he was awarded a graduate assistantship. He is now Director of Music Ministries at A&M United Methodist Church in Texas.


Sophie Wang, violin, former Woodruff scholar, was accepted for graduate studies with full scholarship at New England Conservatory (NEC), Yale School of Music, and Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Fall 2016, she will be enrolling at NEC for her MM degree in violin performance. 

Eric Tsai, violin, former Woodruff scholar, was accepted at Curtis Institute of Music, where he will be enrolling Fall 2016.

Sarah Velasco, violin, was accepted for solo master studies at Haute Ecole de Musique at Conservatoire de Lausanne, Switzerland, where she will be enrolling Fall 2016.
Summer 2016, Sarah attended and performed at both Colorado Music College Summer Music Festival and Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Weiru Sheng, violin, will continue her MM in Performance graduate studies at Schwob School of Music - Columbus State University. Summer 2016, Weiru attended and performed at Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Elzbieta Tokarska, violin, former Woodruff scholar, will continue her graduate Artist Diploma studies at the Schwob School of Music - Columbus State University.

Emily Vold (2011) is finishing her doctorate in violin performance at Mannes.

Likai He, violin, former Woodruff scholar, currently pursuing graduate studies at Shepherd School of Music - Rice University, was awarded a fellowship to participate at Aspen Music Festival, summer 2016.

Kellen Gray (BM 2007), won Conducting Fellowship with the Chicago Sinfonietta. Will cover five concerts and conduct one in the 2016-17 season ; Conducted the New World Symphony in May 2016 for new music readings; Appointed as the Conducting Fellow for the Eastern Music Festival in Summer 2016; Assistant Conductor of the Valdosta Symphony, Music Director of the Valdosta Youth Symphony;  Assistant Conductor for Asian Tour of the Hollywood Concert Orchestra.  Received a Master’s in orchestral conducting from Valdosta State University in 2015. He is currently studying at CSU, pursuing the Artist Diploma in orchestral conducting with Prof. Paul Hostetter.


Mario Rivera and Dragana Loncar, (BM 2016), are attending the University of Colorado at Boulder on a full Teaching Assistantship to pursue their MM degrees.

Anton Jakovcic, (MM 2015), joined the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in 2015.  He is also a member of LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and an instructor for the LaGrange Syphony's String Project.  In the Fall of 2016, Anton has been appointed to be a music teacher in the Muscogee County School District.

Katie Taylor, (BME 2014), has been appointed Orchestra Director at Tapp Middle School (Cobb County).  She is also a member of the Atlanta Pops Orchestra and LaGrange Symphony Orchestra.

Ryan Harvey (BME 2016) is the Orchestra Director at Woodland High School, McDonough, GA


Esther Holliday, cello (2016), former Woodruff scholar, participated at the Meadowmount School of Music this summer, studying with Hans Jensen.

Annette Jakovcic, cello (2015), participated in the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades, France this summer, studying with Arto Noras.

Klayton Hoefler, cello (2015), is now orchestra director at Blackmon Road Middle School and Shaw High School.

Zoltan Csikos, cello (2015), is pursuing is doctoral degree at the University of North Texas in Denton with Nikola Ruzevic.

Branson Yeast, cello (2013), was invited as Principal Cellist of the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, playing under Alan Gilbert, Susanna Malkki, and Matthias Pintscher.

Natalie Higgins Appointed Horn Professor

Dr. Natalie Higgins has been appointed Assistant Professor of Music in Horn at the Schwob School of Music, to begin August, 2016. Dr; Higgins received her DMA from the University of Missouri—Kansas City and is a founding member of the Alias Brass Company. She is currently on the faculty of Missouri Western State University. Congratulations and welcome to Dr. Higgins!

Stephanie Patterson Appointed Bassoon Professor

Dr. Stephanie Willow Patterson has been appointed Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the Schwob School of Music. She holds a D.M.A. in bassoon performance with a minor in theory pedagogy from the University of Iowa, an M.M. from Wichita State, a B.M. in bassoon performance, and a B.A. in Russian Language from Oberlin. A California native with a passion for collaboration, outreach, and contemporary music, she most recently served as bassoon professor at Wichita State University and formerly held teaching positions at Bethany College and Bethel College in Kansas. Her ├ętude book “An Introduction to Contemporary Music for Bassoon” was published in 2014. Welcome, Dr. Patterson!
